Video: The Staircase in the Orphanage
The 1931 version of the film Madchen in Uniform was shot on location of the old orphanage in Potsdam. The dramatic staircase plays a major role in the film. Bombed during the 2nd World War, part of the building no longer exists, including the original staircase used in the film. However, the majestic main staircase is still there and I filmed myself walking and marching up the stairs, singing songs from both film versions.While both films have a happy ending the book does not and Manuela commits suicide. The death scene is particularly atmospheric and this darker ending is implied in the video.Video: Das Treppenhaus im Waisenhaus
Die Filmversion von 1931 wurde im Waisenhaus in Potsdam gedreht, dessen dramatisches Treppenhaus im Film eine große Rolle spielt. Dieser Teil des Hauses wurde im 2. Weltkrieg zerstört, das majestätische Haupttreppenhaus aber steht noch. Ich habe mich dort gefilmt, wie ich, Lieder aus beiden Filmen singend, die Treppe hochgegangen und -marschiert bin.Während beide Filmversionen ein Happy End haben, ist das Ende im Buch düster und Manuela stürzt sich aus dem Dachfenster zu Tode. Diese Todesszene hat mich besonders beeindruckt und wird im Video angedeutet.
